Why Do We Seek God?

It is one of the most foundational commands in the Christian faith, given to us by Jesus Himself: "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" (Matthew 6:33). But have you ever stopped to ask why? In a world filled with immediate needs, pressing desires, and countless distractions, why does God call us to make seeking Him our primary focus?

 Why Do We Seek God?

The answer is not found in a simple obligation, but in a profound invitation to discover our true purpose, identity, and peace. We seek God because it is the key to unlocking everything we were created for.

1. We Seek Him Because We Are Commanded To

The journey begins with obedience. Jesus’s instruction in Matthew 6:33 is not a gentle suggestion; it is a command from our Creator. He instructs us to prioritize His kingdom above all else because He, as our loving Father, knows what is ultimately best for us.

This command is echoed throughout Scripture. As shared in the message, 1 Chronicles 16:11 says, “Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.” God commands it because this singular focus realigns our lives with our divine design. It is the ultimate act of trust, shifting our reliance from our own limited strength to His infinite power and wisdom.

2. We Seek Him to Find Life and Salvation

Our natural state, since the fall of Adam, is one of spiritual separation from God. We may walk and breathe, but without Christ, we are, as the message poignantly states, "dead person[s] walking on earth." We seek God to find true, eternal life.

Salvation is found in no one else. Romans 10:14 reminds us, “How can they call on him if they don't seek to know him?” The act of seeking is the pathway to calling on His name. It is the process of moving from darkness into light, from death into life. We seek Him to answer the deepest need of our soul—reconciliation with our Creator and the gift of eternal life that comes through Jesus Christ.

3. We Seek Him for an Intimate Relationship

Beyond command and salvation lies the heart of the matter: relationship. God is not a distant, disinterested ruler; He is a loving Father who yearns for a deep, personal connection with you. The ultimate reason we seek His kingdom is to know the King.

This relationship is a two-way street. James 4:8 gives us a beautiful promise: “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” When we take a step toward Him through prayer and studying His Word, He draws near to us. He reveals Himself, His character, and His plans for our lives. This relationship is the source of our purpose. As the message emphasizes, “You will only know that if you seek him... You will get to know who you are. You will know your purpose.”

How Do We Seek Him? The Foundation of His Word

Knowing why we seek God naturally leads to the question of how. The answer is clear and consistent: through His Word.

The message powerfully underscores that “you cannot seek the Lord without knowing his word. He is the word himself.” John 1:1 declares, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

To read the Bible is not merely to read a historical text; it is to engage with God Himself. It is how He speaks to us, how we understand His nature, and how we learn to recognize His voice. Spending time in Scripture is the primary action of seeking. It is the means by which we move from ignorance, which the enemy can exploit, into the light of truth and freedom.

A Magnet for Blessing and Purpose

Jesus promised that when we seek the kingdom first, “all these things will be added to you.” This isn’t a promise of mere material prosperity; it is the promise of a life falling into its rightful place. When God is our focus, we become, as the message says, “a magnet of blessings” and “a magnet of whatever life desires.” Our priorities align with His, our desires become purified, and we step into the good works He prepared for us long ago.

Conclusion: This Is the Time to Seek Him

Distractions, chaos, and confusion constantly pull for our attention, attempting to divert our focus from what matters most. But the call remains: This is the time to decide to seek God.

  • We seek Him because He commands it, and His commands are for our good.
  • We seek Him to find life and salvation that cannot be found anywhere else.
  • We seek Him for the intimate relationship we were created for, a relationship that reveals our true identity and purpose.

Take the step today. Open His Word. Come near to Him. And discover the promise that He is not far from any one of us (Acts 17:27). He is waiting, ready to reveal Himself to those who earnestly seek Him.
