The command to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” is a familiar verse to many (Matthew 6:33). But what does it truly mean to seek God’s kingdom? And more importantly, how do we practically do it in our daily lives?
This isn't just a religious duty; it's an invitation to an intimate relationship with the Creator. We seek Him for life, salvation, and because He commanded it, knowing that in doing so, we become aligned with His purpose and will for our lives. When we make seeking God our primary focus, everything else we need falls into its rightful place.

| How to Seek God: A Practical Guide to a Deeper Relationship |
Based on the deep wisdom of Scripture, here are five fundamental ways we can actively seek the kingdom of God.
1. Through His Word
You cannot seek God without knowing Him, and you cannot know Him without His Word. The Bible is not merely a book; it is God’s self-revelation. The Word itself is God (John 1:1). Studying Scripture is how we learn His character, His promises, and His will.
As Psalm 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” It is our guide for life. The enemy often fights to keep us from reading the Bible, but we must ask the Holy Spirit—the divine author of Scripture—to open our understanding, illuminate mysteries, and give us the grace to consistently engage with His Word.
2. Through Prayer
Prayer is the vital conversation that fuels our relationship with God. It is the active practice of seeking Him. When we pray, we demonstrate our dependence on Him, shifting our reliance from ourselves to our Heavenly Father.
God Himself invites us into this dialogue, promising in Jeremiah 29:12-13, “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Prayer is not a monologue; it is an act of faith that God hears, listens, and answers, drawing us closer to His presence.
3. Through Worship and Praise
Worship is the act of putting God first in everything. It shifts our focus from our circumstances and ourselves onto the King of Kings. True worship is not just about songs; it’s a posture of the heart that acknowledges God’s supreme worth and sovereignty.
John 4:23 tells us, “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” God is actively seeking for those who will prioritize Him, and worship is a powerful expression of that priority.
4. Through Obedience and Alignment
We cannot claim to seek God while consistently disobeying Him. Obedience is the tangible expression of our love and faith. It shows God that we trust His commandments and are serious about aligning our lives with His kingdom’s principles.
As John 14:21 makes clear, “Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” Obedience is not about earning love; it is our response to it. It is the pathway through which God reveals more of Himself to us.
5. Through the Community of Believers
We are not meant to seek God in isolation. The fellowship of other believers—the Church—is a crucial element of our spiritual journey. God specially reveals His presence in the unity of the body of Christ.
Matthew 18:20 promises, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Being in community provides encouragement, accountability, and a collective strength that we cannot find on our own. It places us in a position to seek and find God together.
Making the Decision to Seek HimSeeking the kingdom is a deliberate choice to focus on God through His Word, prayer, worship, obedience, and fellowship. It is the way we carry the image of Christ and access the deeper dimensions of God’s power and presence.
If you have never begun this relationship, the first step is to give your life to Jesus Christ. You can only truly seek a God you know. Make up your mind today to focus on Him, and you will discover a faithful Father who has been seeking you all along.
